Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
- John 4: 13-14
The woman at the well is a classic character in the gospel accounts. The story can be found in John 4 (which you are encouraged to read), but this is a quick summary. She goes to the well to draw water, and meets Jesus who is seated there. He asks her for some water, but she is confused that he would consider asking her for water. During a meaningful conversation, Jesus tells her that He has a better water, a living water, and if she would drink from this water, she would never thirst again. At the end of the conversation, Jesus reveals his identity and she fully understands what he was saying. Jesus was the Messiah, and he was referring to himself and the fulfilment that comes from accepting and pursuing God in faith, in spirit, and in truth.
Can we relate to this story in our modern day? What is Jesus pulling away our gaze from to show us He is what we are really in need of? Do we have modern day wells that we are drawing from that we knowingly or unknowingly use in an attempt to fill a void? They may quench a thirst in the moment, but we are back down to empty after a while, and we have to keep returning. Sometimes these wells may be unhealthy habits, be it physically, emotionally, socially or spiritually. Maybe these wells may be in the form of persons we may have unhealthy attachments to, or maybe these wells may be past hurts or a wide range of addictions. Whatever they may be, Christ is there with us by these wells, and His words to the woman at the well continue to echo to us even today: "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
God has created us, He knows us and He knows what is best for us. He knows that there is something in us that only He can fill, only He can truly satisfy. Do we want to be satisfied with His water today? As we conclude, I cannot help but include this quote below for reflection.
“There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.”
- Blaise Pascal
Prayer:
Father, You are amazing. Your words are timeless and we are forever learning more about You. Thank You for revealing to us what this longing in our hearts is truly about - a need for a relationship with You. Forgive us for the many incorrect ways we have tried to satisfy ourselves. They pale in comparison to what You truly and authentically offer to us. Fill us Lord, with Your grace, Your love, Your Spirit, and show us the way to true contentment that leads to eternal life. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Be blessed by the following prayer in song. 🙂🎧🙏🏽
